Twelve paintings, 15x22".

The months of August and September are the best months for painting outside. During the bulk of the summer, I find myself painting hazy greens on green, but in the autumn, I have so many colors to document in the landscape. Every plant acquires its own startling color, allowing it to stand out from the others. Fields shimmer gold, trees blaze yellows, oranges and red, and every green imaginable is present. The skies tumble with dramatic clouds, the air is clear and pure, and the season is free of biting insects.
I was asked to paint some scenes in Cazenovia. The village is a gem, with many graceful architectural elements and quirky facades behind the village main street. Water is everywhere – the lake, the pond, the inlet and the river, all reflecting the beautiful colors of autumn. Energized by the water scenes, I sought more quiet ponds, which I found in the Kettle Lakes in Tully. By now, it was well into October, thanks to the endless summer we had this year. I painted in the woods on land owned by the land trust and listened to the migrating geese overhead, and enjoyed a feeling of immense peace and great privilege.

Spring in Kalymnos means a profusion of blooms. The mountainsides and valleys become covered with carpets of flowers which are filled with honeybees. The "Margaritas" in these paintings grow up to 5 feet tall and stand in beautiful contrast against the turquoise water and cobalt mountains in the distance.
These paintings were painted from life, with a few touch ups done later. I find great enjoyment in painting outside with the breeze, the sun, the sound of the insects and activities around me as a backdrop to the scene. I paint landscapes as a way to document a brief few hours in a particular spot.
Road Trip
Imagine (Skaneateles) invited me to show the paintings from the 2015 June road trip out west.

Driving across the country gives one the sense of opulence of land. Roads that disappear in a straight line into the horizon are unforgettable. There are few landmarks and the ones that appear – small shacks, solitary farmhouses, grain elevators, canyons and mountains – stand out. Everywhere the eye falls, there’s a paintable scene. A short scramble into the countryside with a painting backpack, and then rooting oneself to a single spot for 3-4 hours makes the time slip by unnoticed.
These paintings were all painted outdoors, on location, with some touch-ups done afterwards. We visited Colorado, Utah and Squamish. The paintings were all full size (22 x 30 inches).

August, 2012
Sarah Panzarella invited me to display some paintings of Skaneateles at Imagine. I spent a month in the summer painting the village and the lake. I discovered that even at 6 in the morning, there are a lot of people out and about, walking their dogs and getting coffee. The village is very picturesque in all seasons, but the flower boxes in the summer make it even more so.
